I’m ga-ga for Goo
Hahahahahahaha… Okay… (take a breath) Hahahahahahaha… Funny video! What is it? It is a commercial for a Japanese searchengine called - Goo.
After watching the video, I was intrigued and had to check it out for myself. So, as expected, the homepage was in… Japanese. (Go figure.)
My initial thought was.. “Oh well, I don’t speak Japanese.” However, I began to think better than that and decided to try a search anyway. I started with a simple search for a Software Engineer skilled in C++. (see below)
The search results looked promising, but (as I said) it was in Japanese. Fortunately, there was an option to read the results in English. (See the arrow?)
And wow! The results are easy for me to read and… quite good actually.
One thing I noticed from my experiment was that the results I had prior to switching to English were different. So I would suggest searching in both languages and reviewing all the results that look interesting to you.
After trying a few more searches, I began to wonder how “Goo” stood up to Google. I began comparing the results and… what do you know? They were very similar! So similar in fact that trying a tilde search actually worked. (Tilde search is exclusive to Google.) So a search on ~CV C++ in Goo, returned nearly identical results in Google. So why brand a website - Goo instead of just creating a Japanese version of Google? (Like this one) Maybe its a marketing thing and they are trying to move in stealthmode? (If so, sorry… I may have blown your cover.) Hmm… more than likely its just Google powering it.
No wonder the results were good.
