Its been awhile since I’ve played (or even looked at) Google Base. Its been in beta a loong time. From my best recollection, Google Base lets you post classifieds (Housing, Products, Recipes, et cetera) en masse. Users can then search through the various ads and buy your stuff. For example, below is the homepage for Google Base.
Check out what happens when I click the “Hotels” link.
See? Lots of Hotel Room ads from various Travel destination sites.
Now, let’s go back to the Google Base homepage and click on the “People Profiles” section. (See arrow)
As Google Base is searching the profiles of various Personals websites, there is a lot of well… personal things to search on such as Gender and Marital Status. Unless you are looking for a date, that is unimportant to you. What may prove of interest is the “Keywords” section. (see arrow below) Try adding a job title like… “Programmer,” which is what I did.
And these are the results. Not a lot, but something to work with. Let’s click on Peter Wang here.
This is his profile and a link (see arrow?) to contact him.
You will not find a lot of passive prospects with this technique, but no doubt you will find a few here that you won’t see elsewhere. (Worth a few minutes of your time. ) Now let me show you one more way to search Google Base (that perhaps, I should have just shown from the beginning).
Head back to the Google Base homepage and type in this query:
What you will see in the results are links to 140+ resumes featuring people with a background in C++. Here is an example of such a profile - Mr. Wen Liu.
This is interesting, yes? (Smile)
Happy Hunting!
-Jim

Just in case you are reading this in a RSS feed or in email, I just redirected my domain and every blog post to TheRecruitersLounge.com. (Please check it out.) The decision to move everything here was something I have been going back in forth in my mind for some time now, but I believe it was the right way to go.
If you have bookmarked any of my posts from before, no worries, they will simply redirect to that same post as it resides on this domain. In other words, if you bookmarked www.jimstroud.com/whatever, it will simply redirect to www.therecruiterslounge.com/whatever. I hope this proves convenient for you.
Well, if you would, please leave me a comment or two on the new look and perhaps guess the direction this whole thing is going towards. (Could be good for a giggle or two.) That’s it for now!
A brain-damaged former employee of Walmart is ordered to pay $470,000.00 to their former employer. (WTF?!) Is this fair? Check out the video below and decide for yourself.
I stumbled across a most EXCELLENT ad on Craig’s List and had to share it. Oh, if only more companies were this benevolent when swinging their downsizing axes.
Yesterday I had to do one of the more difficult things — lay off three of my good friends, all of whom are talented and professional developers.
I’m posting here today in hopes that someone out in the world is looking for some seasoned talent, people who can get things done for you. I will personally recommend all three of these guys, and I’ll detail below each of them. If you are interested, I’m including my phone number. I’ll take your contact information and give it to the person(s) you are interested in, and you can take it from there.
Curiously enough, I also have the resume of a VERY talented Software Engineering Manager looking for work in CA (Bay Area). To his credit, he currently manages a team of 6 software engineers. He has received 2Outstanding Performance Awards. He is the co-author of patent applications, and he has obviously released several products.
This is a freebie referral, so I am not asking for anything in return, just helping a friend. If you are interested, send me an email (jimstroud @ jimstroud.com) with the subject line “I want to talk to that Software Engineering Manager” and I will pass your information on.
Below is a rather intense recruiting ad for the UK Ministry of Defence (from the 1990’s). My question: Does it work for recruiting new people into that Militia? Or, is it better suited for a training video after the person has signed on? (Or both?) Your thoughts?

In response to what was becoming an urgent need in the industry to have a conference that was focused on the art (some say science) of Sourcing and Talent Acquisition - SourceCon was born and launched in 2007. In today’s world where Talent is a key driver in successful businesses, there has been a trend towards the specialization of identifying and attracting candidates. This specialized skill is no longer a solely owned function of the full lifecycle recruiters in both Agency and Corporate Recruiting departments.
The Sourcer, Researcher, Name Generator and Candidate Developer have emerged as the new champions to help fight the war for talent. The industry has new hero’s who’s skills and expertise can no longer be confined to a side track at the national recruiting conferences.
We intentionally set out to be different from all the traditional conferences. We wanted a venue where you don’t have to feel like you are constantly being pitched and sold on a slide deck or discussion by the latest and greatest. It was and is our intent that you spend your quality time and money on a conference that is bursting with opportunities to learn, share and collaborate with your peers, luminaries and industry leaders.
2. Type in “Software Developer” (With or without quotes, you get the same results)
3. Get results like below. What you are looking at are people who signed up for Twitter and added their job title in their profiles.
See how easy that was? Well, suppose you are looking for more than Software Developers? Are there other types of passive candidates I can target on Twitter? Sure! Here is a list I put together as food for thought.
A search on “Software Developers” brought back 485 results.
A search on “Software Engineer” brought back 485 results.
A search on “Nurse” brought back 157 results.
A search on “VP of Marketing” brought back 23 results.
A search on “VP of Sales” brought back 5 results.
A search on “CEO” brought back 9 results.
A search on “chemist” brought back 29 results.
A search on “Electrical Engineer” brought back 40 results.
A search on “CTO” brought back 485 results.
A search on “Programmer” brought back 980 results.

It is with mixed emotions that I leave the house of Microsoft, but I feel compelled to follow my heart. Sometimes you can stay in a role too long and burn yourself out; should you ever find yourself in that position, my advice is to follow your passion. As you may have guessed from the content on this site, I have a passion for new media and how it can be applied in various ways (least of all, recruiting).
Well… (drumroll please) I recently accepted a position as a Social Media Development Manager. I will be working for an established company based in Silicon Valley, CA that has made a ton of money in the B2B space. I will be assisting them in promoting their B2C offering. I will continue to work from my home office. (Does that rock, or what?!!) I can’t go into detail now because the company has not yet announced their new startup division, but I will as soon as I am able. (Hope I can count on your support when the time comes?)
So what does this mean for this blog? Not entirely sure; at the moment I am considering several options. I mean, my career is shifting, so the stuff that I want to blog about will no doubt change as well. Will I continue this as an Recruiting/Employment blog? Will it morph into more of a Social Media twist on recruiting? Will I sell out? Will I merge my content with a certain site? All very interesting questions, that I have no answers for at this writing. I will however, keep you in the loop as things develop. For now, expect more of the same. (Smile)
