THE Federal Government’s $31 billion tax cut package will have a greater effect on women than men, encouraging 23,000 married women into the workforce, Treasury modelling obtained by the Herald shows.

The figures add flesh to the bones of the Government’s consistent claim that the tax cuts will boost labour supply and therefore help to relieve inflationary pressures in the longer term.

A total of 64,000 people are expected to enter the workforce because of the incentive provided by the tax cuts, the modelling shows.

Married people are expected to account for 34,000 of these workers, – 23,000 women and 11,000 men. Single people will also be lured to work, 10,000 women and 9000 men.

The remainder will be 11,000 single parents, the gender of which is not specified in the Treasury modelling.
