Equal rights for Temps and Perms! Does it make sense?

Almost a quarter of employers believe that 1.4m agency and temporary workers should be given the same employment rights as permanent staff after only six weeks in a job, according to a survey of 1,500 employers to be published on Wednesday.

The findings, ahead a potential back-bench revolt this Friday against government employment policies, reveal surprising differences of opinion between employers over how long temporary staff should be in a job before they win equal rights.

The survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and consultants KPMG reports that 21 per cent of employers believed that agency and temporary workers should be treated the same as permanent staff “from day one.” Another 2 per cent believe they should be treated equally within the first 6 weeks.

How long temporary staff should be in a job before they win equal rights. Well, I’ve been a Manpower Staffing Associate for 3 years in the same jog as an Event coordinator for their IBM client. I work alongside regular IBM employees doing similar work at their events. After the event, the IBMers get awards and bonuses. I get a thank you email from the client to my Manpower employer. I do similar work as my IBM counterparts but I am paid less money, get less benefits, and there’s no promotion insight for a job well done. I say the law needs to be rewritten for Manpower associates working as contractors on “long-term” assignments that they classify as temporary. I mean really, how long can you work before it’s no longer temporary? I know other women who have worked for Manpower with the same client for 6 to 8 years and are still treated like temporary workers. No salary increases in 6 years! Someone in the labor department needs to investiage this and find the loop holes that makes it too easy for these staffing agencies to exploit workers that may be in desperate situations that limits them to tolerate this type of worker abuse.
