‘Unscrupulous’ manpower agents work in Africa too

DOHA • It is not just in the Indian subcontinent that “unscrupulous” manpower agents are at work, but in Africa as well, going about recruiting for the hotel industry here.

An Ethiopian hotel employee told The Peninsula: “People pay between QR4,500 to QR5,000 back home to get a job here. But now that I am working here, I make just QR800 per month, so I depend on tips to make ends meet. The hotels here are hand-in-glove with these agents.”

He alleged that the agents mistreat the new recruits all the way until they reach Doha. He said he and another group of recruits brought here to work for a hotel were even mistreated at Dubai airport, to where they had flown from Addis Ababa before arriving here.

The employee said that even though the agents are legal and registered, they do not provide the right information to potential recruits. Rather, they paint a very rosy picture of working in Qatar, promising huge salaries and a swanky lifestyle. However, on arrival here, these recruits find that this is far from the case.

“Ethiopians are much in demand, because we are comfortable with the English language,” he said. English is pretty much a necessity in the hospitality industry. Ethiopian maids are also making their way here, he said.

“Agents are also at work in countries like Kenya. Kenyans are mostly taken to the UAE for jobs in various sectors,” he said.
