Yesterday I discussed MSN News as a good source for passive leads so today, well… more of the same. (Smile)

QUESTION: What if you wanted to use MSN news to source passive leads in a specific location?

ANSWER: Not a problem, simply restrict your search to a geographic-specific news source. For example, say I wanted to find a CFO in Birmingham, AL. I would use the “site” command on the “Everything Alabama” news website. This tells MSN to look only on the Everything Alabama (www.al.com) website for information. After adding the “site” command, I input my keywords so that my search string looks like this: site:al.com CFO birmingham.

Here is a sample result of what I found with this string.

Business brief roundup
Birmingham’s Protective Life Corp. on Thursday said Chief Financial Officer Allen W. Ritchie is being promoted to senior … He most recently served as CFO for Sun Life’s U.S. life insurance subsidiary. Meanwhile, Richard J. Bielen is being …

Now, to limit your searching to a particular news site, search MSN to be sure that its been indexed by MSN. To accomplish this, simply use the “url” comand. For example, if I wanted to see if The New York Times website has been included in MSN’s index, I type url:nytimes.com. The result I get back lets me know that the pages of The New York Times are included in the MSN Search index. (Notice that the “Web” tab is highlighted? For this command to work, I searched the Web and not the News.)

QUESTION: How can I make an even more detailed search for passive candidates on MSN news?

ANSWER: By leveraging MSN’s search syntax! There are quite a few search commands available to MSN search users, (for an exhaustive list click here) but I want to focus on a few for our purposes.

“inbody” returns pages that contain a specified term in the body of the page.
“inurl” returns pages that contain a specified term in the URL of the page.
“intitle” returns pages that contain a specified term in the title of the page.

Let’s say that I want to search for news stories that have IBM in the headline and mention the term “engineer.” This is the search string I would use… intitle:IBM inbody:engineer

Here is a sample of the results I found with this search…

IBM prepares open source systems management initiative
It’s really going to be focusing on the tooling aspect of [systems management], how you go off and instrument and tool your apps,” said Mark Weitzel, senior software engineer at IBM. Resource modeling also is part of COSMOS, he added. Enabling …

Now it stands to reason that a daily or weekly news resouce will have more data than say… a monthly periodical. For that reason, let’s say you want to focus a search for a “VP of Marketing” with a background in Media, but only on news resources updated on a daily or weekly basis. Here is how the search string would look: (inurl:daily inurl:weekly) inbody:”VP of Marketing” media

Here is a sample of the results I found with this search…

ABC Hires First Hispanic Agency of Record
… which specializes in Latino entertainment marketing, will be responsible for creative work as well as strategy and media … Marla Provencio, co-senior VP of marketing at ABC, said the agency would also help the network advertise in local theaters in …

USA : Shop.org appoints Ken Eisner as new VP, Marketing
… of the National Retail Federation (NRF), announced that Ken Eisner has joined the organization as Vice President of Marketing … He also directed creative and media efforts for the firm and managed company partnerships and product development. Prior …
