Do you use online job boards? Perhaps after my last class, you’ve become a boolean bandit on the ‘net and are feeling quite comfortable with your online research skills? As skilled as you may be, there are still plenty of leads floating beneath your radar. What am I talking about? I am speaking of passive candidates cited in the media everyday. Think about it… executives, professionals and experts from every industry under the sun are quoted in the media everyday. Perhaps it has not occurred to you, but these people would make excellent prospects for your open positions and (even better) may prove a valuable resource of additional leads. Intrigued? Good… Over the next five lessons, I will give you tips on how to use Online News Resources to do that very thing.

First things first! To find passive candidates with Online News Resources, you have to actually visit a news site. (Well, duh…) So let’s go to one of my favorite websites - MSN. As a quick fyi, all of the searches on MSN are now powered by “Windows Live!” (Cool!) Once you arrive at the MSN site, click the “News” link. (See the arrow?)

Searching with MSN

Second thing is to add in your search terms. I recommend using Job Titles in combination with Company Names. For example, I am going to perform a search for Software Engineers working with Sybase. This is the search string I used… “software engineer” sybase

To quote the search result, “Jeff Wegher, a software engineer with Sybase, acknowledged IE’s security loopholes, but held fast in his dedication to Redmond’s browser, saying, “Microsoft IE is the best, security issues aside.” Among those dyed-in-the-wool IE fans, Firefox emerged …
Hmmm… I suppose now I would have to do is call the company, ask to speak to Jeff Wegher and (hopefully) recruit him for my client.

A second method of leveraging MSN news is to implement (what I call) “phrasiology.” Phrasiology is searching news stories for specific phrases in relations to your open requisition. For example, if I was looking for an “Aerospace Engineer,” then I may imagine reading a news article on Aerospace Engineering and how a reporter would mention that job title. For example, “John Doe served NASA as an Aerospace Engineer” is something that could be written in an article. So my search phrase would be “as an Aerospace Engineer.” Using that phrase in quotes, lead me to the following results…
