In my last post, I showed you how to find resumes with words common to most resumes and how to source resumes prepared by Resume Writers.

Shakespeare said, “A rose is a rose by any other name.” The same logic applies to job titles. Sure a Software Engineer at Company X is functionally the same as a Software Developer at Company Y, but unless you use both titles in your search (Software Engineer and Software Developer) you will miss out on some leads. Here are some ways to find job titles relevant to your search.

A. Perform a search on careersites that match your requisition and take note of the job titles that come up. For example, a search on CareerBuilder for a “Business Analyst” returned these results.

Some of the job titles that appeared in the results included: Equities Business Analyst, IT Business Analyst, Business Systems Analyst and Information Systems Business Analyst. Depending on your requisition, all of these titles could be included in your search. If that were the case, you could possibly run a search string similar to this one…

B. Visit the Careers section of competitors and add their relevant job titles to your search. Of course, you could also add the names of your competitors to your keyword queries as well. Here are a few samples…

Don’t let acronyms fool you! Sure the abbreviation of AJAX may be a more popular way of referring to “Asynchronous Java and XML” however, it is to your sourcing advantage to use both the abbreviated term and the full-term in your search.

Jim, I am absolutely new to recruiting and I don’t know how to do advanced research on the web looking for resumes of passive candidates. Is there a book on the way to word terms but ( ) around words etc. Can you direct me for my own education? Thank you so much, Janet
