(Web 2.0) Sourcing with 43 Things

“Web 2.0″ sure is a hot term these days. I was reading about the new crop of net companies and discovered 43 Things. From their website…

43 Things

Write down your goals

People have known for years that making a list of goals is the best way to achieve them. Why is that? First, getting your goals in writing can help you clarify what you really want to do. You might find you have some important and some frivolous goals. That is OK. You’ve got space for 43 Things on your list. Not every one of them has to change the world (but save room for the ones that might).

It goes on to say how your goals may inspire others. After reading this, I visited the site and in addition to “inspiration,” I found a few leads to people I might want to recruit. Let me show you how I did it.

This is the homepage for 43 Things.

43 Things

Before you do any searches on it, you must first join the club (so to speak). Not a big deal as it is free to join. Once I created an account, I typed in the big search box - C++.

43 Things

14 results are returned and only one has a picture with it, so I click that one. (See arrow #1?) 43 things also suggested other terms I can search on like C#. (See arrow #2?) I ignore them for now and look back at clicking the picture of the 43 Things member who has an interest in C++.

43 Things

Hmmmm… 43 Things takes me to a web-based contact page for this member. And theoretically, I write him, they respond and I hire him.

43 Things

Or do I? Well, it depends on what skillset I am looking to hire. According to the rules of 43 Things, people post about what they want to do. If someone wants to learn C++ then chances are that they might be too junior for me. So was this a waste of time? Of course not! Simply look for people who want to become executives or tecnical leads. Hey, if someone is aspiring to become a CTO, chances are that they may have some technical experience, yes?

Here are a few leads I thought may prove interesting to you, depending on what you are recruiting for of course.

synthesize petroleum using nanotechnology
Get good executive job
be a better manager
launch the neurotechnology industry
build a geodesic suborbital satellite

Digability rating: As a source for potential candidates, ummm… okay. Worth a peek.
