I read an interesting article today on Email Management that gave some good advice on managing email. What caught my eye the most however, is a mathematical formula the writer cited.

(*) Divide your yearly salary by 120,000 to get your per-minute wage.

I tried it and it works! Go figure…

This had my mind reeling in possibilities. How cool would it be to negotiate a salary or extend an offer letter describing the compensation on a “per minute” basis? I imagine that this would greatly communicate to the candidate how valuable they are to your company. I mean, what other companies are pitching to a candidate per minute market value. Probably no one. I can hear the closing argument now.

RECRUITER: We are really impressed with your background Ms. Candidate and would like to extend to you an offer of $1.00 per minute.

CANDIDATE: Thank you. Ummm… Did I hear you correctly? $1.00 per minute?

RECRUITER: Yes, $1.00 per minute. You see, we believe in your ability so strongly that we have gone through the trouble of calculating the value you bring to our organization by the minute. (This works out to $120,000.00 annually.)

At this moment, if the candidate is not impressed by the salary, surely they are impressed by the presentation. What this communicates to the candidate is that this company is an innovator and not content in doing “more of the same,” or “we do that too, but better mentality other organizations have. Just a thought…
